Defending champions, Enyimba Int'l FC of Aba on Wednesday, edged Bendel Insurance of Benin 2-1 in a duel that pitted the two domestic giants of last season, against each other.
Having won the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title, to make it a record ninth league trophy; the clash against Bendel Insurance, winners of the 2022 NFF Federation Cup; had all the trappings of the long forgotten Charity Cup.
The match played at the Enyimba International Stadium, came alive, after it was paused for half time, at goalless; with Joseph Atule putting the Aba People's Elephant ahead in the 71st minute.
The Federation Cup holders response, was immediate, and they drew level through Ismael Seriki four (4) minutes later.
But having had a torrid start to their 2023/24 NPFL season, Enyimba had to dig deeper, and Chijioke Mbaoma produced a moment of magic to restore the lead; which rapped up the victory.
Significantly, it was Enyimba's fisrt back-to-back victory this season, having downed Lobi Stars of Makurdi, on Sunday; and the maximum points gained took their tally to 13 points; same as the Benin Arsenal and Plateau United.
Enyimba with yet another outstanding match, against Remo Stars of Ikenne, also moved from 16th in the table, and are now 8th; www.ckdmedia.ng reports.
